Subud New York Annual Group Membership Meeting Results

Dear Fellow Subud New Yorkers,

I am writing to you as your new Chair, following this past weekend’s successful re-opening of Chelsea Center. (Our Saturday Kedjiwan Day brought in 30-40 people and the Sunday Latihan & Annual General Meeting did likewise, in person and by zoom). I would have written sooner, but I’ve needed time to process what is, to me at least, an unexpected turn of events. I wasn’t sure what to say, so decided to begin by sharing some personal notes, with a more official fact-laden report to follow shortly.

First, here is what I see as my “mission and marching orders”: My first priority will be to get to know each and every one of you and open the doors of communication with the full Board, the Helpers, and amongst the members. I see this as critical to bringing our group back to life following our long pandemic shutdown. I want to hear from you, talk with you, and will commit, on my part, to being an active listener and open and honest communicator. In days past, our group was a beacon to the Subud world–a place where visitors were frequent and welcome, where our community was strong, and where we participated actively in global Subud affairs. I aspire to see those days return.

In parallel with this, we must deal with the challenges and opportunities that arise from owning Chelsea Center. It is a rare jewel in the Subud universe, probably the most valuable asset owned by Subud today, or even in Subud history. The building is old, built in 1932, and it is damaged. It needs serious repair and upgrading. Yet the land on which the Center sits, and the air rights above it, are worth more than $20 million! This imposes the responsibility of being “good stewards” not only on the Board and the Helpers, but on each and every one of us. Ultimate authority resides with you, the members, to marshal our collective experience and intuition, guided by Almighty God. To this end, the SNY Dewan, together with a capable team of past SNY leaders and non-Subud professionals, will continue dealing with the short-term issues we face, while also beginning to plan for the long haul. The plan–indeed the mandate from the AGM–is to work closely with the members and we will do just that.

Some of you know me, others not so much. In a sentence, I am the father of seven kids, now grown, part of a multi-generational Subud family, now dispersed in this world and the next (smile). I work as a lawyer in Manhattan and have a long and rich history with New York. I am active in the Subud Archives and with the development and management of Subud USA’s two-acre Amani-Twin Oaks campus in the Washington DC area. I am a Subud kid, getting a bit long in the tooth. My father was opened in NYC in 1958. We lived in Washington DC but visited often in the 1960s (I vividly remember the Briarcliff World Congress in Tarrytown in 1963). I attended law and business school in NY in the 1970s, got married in the Subud house on 5th & 23rd, had my first child here, and launched my career. I have been a frequent visitor over the decades, with many friends in the group, some now deceased or having moved away. I returned to NYC in 2018, while keeping my home in Louisville, KY. During the pandemic, I have been working remotely, with my firm and on the SNY Board, coming into town as needed. I expected to move back this summer, but serious health issues got in the way. I plan to move back before year end.

I am committed to the latihan and find great joy (and occasional frustration) in serving Subud. It is given that I will make mistakes as Chair but be assured it will not be for lack of sincere effort. My main mantra in times of stress and distress is “Run, don’t walk, to the latihan”. I am very excited about the journey ahead. Dexter Douglass generously agreed to serve as Vice-Chair and was approved by unanimous acclamation at the AGM. We will be working very closely together. Susana Thomson and Lucas Boladian (our former SNY and SUSA Chair), were overwhelmingly approved as new Directors to join the current Board of Lailani, Josephine, Sylvia and Arnold. In keeping with my past experience at every level of Subud, the SNY Board and Helpers will form, and be forged into, an active Dewan working together with you, the members, for the good of our Center and for Subud.

Urgent Appeal from Subud Ukraine

We have received an urgent request for help from Subud Ukraine.

In the weekly Zoom meeting that Susila Dharma International (SDI) sponsors with Matvey Maslov (Subud Ukraine Chair) and various Susila Dharma representatives in Europe, Matvey reports that our Subud sisters and brothers in Ukraine continue to be OK so far. However, attacks and injuries occur without warning in civilian areas as well as in war zones, and medical supplies are running out. Matvey asked if we could help provide some specific desperately-needed, high-tech, compact bandages. These products help keep a wounded person alive until they can receive proper medical care. Subud members in Ukraine will distribute these to first responders.

As the funds come in, Hamida Thomas, the administrator for SDI, sees that the supplies are purchased at the most practical place and price, and our Subud siblings in Europe ship them to Ukraine in the most expedient fashion. It was encouraging to listen to them discuss how to get these supplies over to Matvey ASAP.

Interestingly, Matvey says that private, agile volunteer groups like Subud have had much more of a relief impact than the big well-known organizations. He asks me to pass on his gratitude for the support that has come from Subud USA members.

Meanwhile, may we all surrender in the latihan with hope, courage, and gratitude.

Exciting News! Unanimous Approval for the Amani/Twin Oaks Project…

On July 16, the Subud USA board of directors voted unanimously to approve a resolution to accept the gift of the Amani Center in Beltsville, Maryland, from Subud Washington D.C. and to purchase the adjacent four-bedroom Twin Oaks residential property with revenue from the Amani centerprise. As one national helper commented, “This is such an important project for the future of Subud USA. I think that this is going to be much greater than anything that any of us can imagine.”

The Amani/Twin Oaks project was written about extensively in the June and July Subud USA newsletters, and presented in detail at the National update on July 9, followed by a question and answer session. If you are not familiar with the project, here’s a recap:

The story begins in 2003 when a small group of dedicated Washington DC members with a vision for the future purchased an old house in Beltsville, Maryland. Over the years, and with tremendous commitment and surrender, the old building was torn down and the new Amani center was constructed in its place.

Since that time, the group has built a successful centerprise at Amani, which has been consistently profitable through rentals to churches and other outside groups.

In July 2021, a significant milestone was achieved when the Subud USA archives were moved to the Amani Center, thus providing a permanent home for irreplaceable documents in a specially retrofitted area on Amani’s second floor.

This spring, the members of the Subud Washington DC group, as part of a discussion about sustaining the Amani Center well into the future, voted unanimously to gift the Amani center to Subud USA. At that time, the Subud member who owns the adjacent Twin Oaks residential property expressed an interest in selling that parcel to Subud USA so that the 2-acre Amani/Twin Oaks campus could remain indefinitely in Subud hands.

Twin Oaks is a four-bedroom house that would serve three very important purposes: a residence for an on-site property manager for Amani; an overnight accommodation for those who are visiting Amani to work on the archives; to augment space in the Amani center during Subud gatherings and meetings. Historically, the Amani centerprise has generated enough revenue to cover the expenses associated with the purchase of Twin Oaks.

Two months ago, the Subud USA Board of Directors charged the Subud USA executive committee with vetting all aspects of this proposal to verify its viability and ensure that a long-term commitment would be in the best interest of the membership of Subud USA. In response, the Subud USA executive committee reached out to a variety of Subud experts in the areas of commercial real estate, finance, and law to research the proposed Amani/Twin Oaks acquisition. Subud USA also employed external professionals, such as inspectors and appraisers.

Every step of the way, careful consideration was given not only to the material, but also to the spiritual aspects of the project. On two occasions, the national helpers tested about the project, and in both instances, they received positive results.

Bapak often spoke of the need for enterprises and Subud houses to sustain the growth of Subud. We believe the Amani campus and centerprise align with Bapak’s vision, and we are excited about the possibilities that this project will bring to Subud USA.

Keep it in perspective

Even if you weren't prepared for the day you'll learn your child has some degree of autism, we know it can be hard. But in the grand scheme of things, your child is physically healthy and surrounded by people who care and love him or her.

Talk to other parents of children with ASD
It can be a huge help speaking to others who've already been there. Talk to parents who already went through the path you're now starting. You'll find empowerment, resilience, and even hope.

Think practically

It's best to focus on what you can do, now that you've learned your child has ASD. And there's a lot you can do. Our organization has numerous programs in place to help you and your child achieve their full potential.

Stay optimistic
Positive thinking is a major factor in success. So instead of mulling over things that didn’t go quite right, remind yourself of things that did. And maintain hope for a better future.

Speak to your audience

Take a few moments to plan your post
Once you have a great idea for a post, write the first draft. Some people like to start with the title and then work on the paragraphs. Other people like to start with subtitles and go from there. Choose the method that works for you.

Edit carefully before posting
Once you’re happy with the text, put it aside for a day or two, and then re-read it. You’ll probably find a few things you want to add, and a couple more that you want to remove. As of May 14

The SD/Subud Ukraine aid team has seen some recent successes: Matvey, Subud Ukraine Chair, reported they just received 25 donated generators (19 were procured by SD France, 6 by Salama, the zone rep). He oversaw their delivery to the Ministry of Health in an area where there’s a lot of destruction (only 20 generators fit in the van; the other 5 are still in Poland). Also, they just received a large shipment of donated medicine (procured by Subud members), and were very pleased they managed to receive it without having to pay a customs fee! Matvey is overseeing delivery to hospitals.

Yesterday SD Britain reps met over Zoom with Lailah Nicoletta Armstrong (ICDP founder) and 9 ICDP facilitators in Ukraine (they are not Subud members, but were trained by Lailah). SDIA sent them $5000 last month to support their trainings (SD USA contributed to this). They shared a breakdown of how the money was spent (mainly stipends for facilitators’ time) and many anecdotes about the very positive response to their work. The group feeling was to continue supporting this. SDIA asked us to send $2000 (I offered more – I think we still have $6000? – but Hamida felt we should wait and see what other needs arise).

A Subud doctor in Germany (he is also Subud Germany chair) said he thinks he can get a donated ultrasound machine (used but functional). It was pointed out that the SD hospitals in Democratic Republic of the Congo could really use this, if Ukraine doesn’t have an urgent need. The plan is not yet confirmed.

Due to the crisis in Ukraine, the International Helpers will be hosting a simultaneous World Latihan this Saturday at 3 pm ET; 2 pm CT; 1 pm MT; noon PT; and 10 am HST. The full text of their letter to members is included below.

So that our own monthly National Helper call-in latihan coincides with their scheduled latihan, we will not host a Bapak talk for the month of March, but instead will have call-in latihan beginning at 3 pm ET; 2 pm CT; 1 pm MT; noon PT; and 10 am HST. National Congress Survey: Letter to all Members

We greatly appreciate the responses of those members who completed our survey. Thank you for taking time to help us.

The members of Subud USA are diverse and their answers were also. After taking time to compile and examine the results, we were asked by the National Dewan to test for possible locations and to set the conditions we might use to ensure success.

The National Helpers decided after much conferring to test if the idea of organizing a conference at this time was correct according to the will of God. This weekend we used that question for testing. The NH Dewan received a “no”, the test revealed that this is a difficult time to plan an in-person National Congress. Conditions across the nation are not easy to judge as to where, when, and how best to run a National Congress. That, of course, is not final and we will retest the question in the following months.

From the survey and our testing about the membership, we are very aware of the desire and the need of the members to meet and do in-person latihan. We know that each region is experiencing different conditions as to the virus and travel. Each region can decide the best way forward this year, we hope to support and attend those regional congresses.

SDIA Emergency Response Fund – Ukraine Crisis

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As the invasion of Ukraine has unfolded, so too has a growing humanitarian situation throughout the country. Many of you have written to see how we can help. SDIA is designated by the WSA to take action in humanitarian crises where Subud members are ready to become involved in the response.

At this time, the Subud Ukraine Chairman has requested assistance to receive assistance with QuikClot Gauze Z-Folded and tourist mats, and other needs will become apparent with time. SDIA is sending an advance of $5000 USD to allow the Subud members in Poland to purchase needed supplies to be distributed by Subud members in Ukraine on the ground.

SD Network Passport: FUEGOS in Ecuador

Please join us for our next SD Network Passport session on 5 March when we will be visiting FUEGOS in Ecuador. FUEGOS – a relatively new member of SDIA – has made great progress in a short space of time, during a pandemic – and this is your chance to find out all about it!

FUEGOS stands for Fundación para los Emprendimientos Gastronómicos y las Oportunidades Sostenibles, or ‘Foundation for Gastronomical Entrepreneurship and Sustainable Opportunities’. Its aim is to bring about social, economic and health changes through food via projects such as community gardens, recipe books, a culinary school and touristic homestay placements.

The webinar is scheduled for Saturday 5 March at 16:00 UTC (8:00 Vancouver, 11:00 Quito/New York, 13:00 Buenos Aires, 16:00 London, 17:00 Paris, 18:00 Cape Town, 21:30 Delhi, 23:00 Jakarta, and 3:00 on 6th Feb Sydney).

Growth of Subud Conversation

This is a subject I’m sure many of us think about from time to time, especially when
Subud appears to be shrinking rather than growing.
We are all aware that Bapak told us that the latihan is a direct contact with the
Power of God and a gift for all mankind, not just for the small group of people we are
today. To me this raises the question of what our individual or group responsibilities
might be to facilitate the growth of Subud.
To help answer this question for myself, I tested: what is my role and responsibility
for the growth and development of Subud? In essence, the answer was that I need
to strive to become living proof of the efficacy of the latihan by showing its benefits
in my state being and what I do in the world. There is nothing new in what I
received. It simply reflects Bapak’s advice that Subud will grow via ‘proof not
propaganda’; that people no longer want to just ‘believe’, they want to experience
something that can bring tangible benefits to their lives.
I was greatly interested in what members around the world thought about the
subject and so I invited contributions via Subud Voice, Subud World News, SES
International and Reminders of Reality – and I offer my thanks to these publications
for their assistance.
Some 33 members made contributions which are set out in the following pages – in
surname order, with some members requesting anonymity. A big shout-out of
thanks to these brothers and sisters for taking the time and effort to make their
sincere contributions.

Atalanta SeedMoney Campaign

December is here, the garden is sleeping, and we are down to the wire with our annual fundraiser! If you have have already donated to the Atalanta Cooperative Orchard Garden this year – Thank you!! If you have not donated yet it is not too late – any amount will make a difference. Please also consider sharing this fundraiser.

There is a detailed description of the garden and what we are raising money for this year on our fundraising page . If you would like to know more about Atalanta you can visit our website or reach out to me directly (contact info below) – I’d love to share more about Atalanta and why it is so important to me personally.

The great news is that we achieved our first goal of earning a bonus $100 grant by being one of the garden projects that raised the most after the first week.

We are also in the running for a second bonus grant of $300, $400 or $500 depending on how much we raise from our donors. The more we raise, the larger our bonus grant!

We have less than 6 days left in this funding drive, and we have reached 66% of of our goal to date. Can you help us reach our goal of $3000 plus a bonus grant to purchase fruit trees?

This year’s $eedMoney funds will be used for fruit trees. The orchard is an integral part of the cooperative garden. We currently have 10 fruit trees. The past couple of years have been a challenge to keep our maturing fruit trees because of the local porcupines. The porcupines have been able to climb over the garden fence and have stripped the young trees of their bark. The money from this $eedMoney fundraiser will go to purchasing new trees and the supplies to build porcupine-proof cages to protect them.

The Muhammad Subuh Foundation is happy to invite you to its 2021 Annual General Membership Meeting (AGM), which will once again take place virtually on Zoom. There are two sessions, and they are open to all Subud members around the world. The first session is based upon Jakarta time, WIB, and the second one upon New York time, EST. You are invited to attend whichever meeting better fits your local time.

We invite all Subud members to join us on November 13 , the second Saturday of the month, for an Ibu Rahayu talk.

Time: 2:15 pm ET/1:15 pm CT/12:15 pm MT/11:15 am PT/9:15 am HST.

This will be followed by a call-in latihan at 4:00 pm ET; 3:00 pm CT; 2:00 pm MT; 1:00 pm PT; and 11 am HST.

Ibu’s talk will be via Zoom; The latihan will be dial-in only (not on Zoom). Here’s how you can join each:
