CHILD CARE AND YOUTH PROGRAM

We are excited and happy to have our national congress at the beautiful Hilton Hotel in Vancouver, Washington, just across the river from Portland.  We had the congress there in 2006 and it was one of the best venues for childcare we have had in a city.  It is right across from a lovely little park that has grassy areas, trees, a castle play structure and best of all a sort of man-made creek sculpture with interactive fountains that kids can play in.  The two rooms we have for the program overlook the park and are light and airy with large windows facing the park.  There is also a small pool upstairs at the hotel that we can use.

We will be providing a program for four age groups:
2-6 ; 7-12 ; 13-16 ; 17-22

The program for ages 2-16 will be administered by the outgoing SYA Co-Chair Sulfiati Harris, and will be staffed with childcare personnel and parent volunteers.
The program for 2 to 6 year olds will be from 9 to noon every morning and from 1 to 6 in the afternoons.  The basic charge is $10/child/day.  Evening childcare will be done in the childcare rooms which are near the center of the congress activities, by paid teens.  This will be organized by the parents.
The program for 7-12 year olds and 13 to 16 year olds will operate on roughly the same schedule as the younger children, but the times will be more flexible.

Sonya Conrad, the current SYA Co-Chair, will head up the plans for the youth aged 17-22, and more details about that will be coming later.

COSTS:
The cost remains at $10 per child per day. There will be extra costs for field trips, to be paid at the congress.

DATES OF CHILDCARE:
July 1 afternoon through July 6 morning.

July 1 - $5/child
July 2 through July 5 - $10 per child per day
July 6 - $5 per child

FIELD TRIPS:

We had several successful field trips during the 2006 congress, and we hope to do some of these again, and there are some new ideas to choose from.  They include:

1.  The Clackamas Water Park, about 40 minutes away, was great fun for all ages.
2.  The Space and Science Museum, about 20 minutes away, has an Omnimax Theater and interactive exhibits for all ages
3.  The teens had an exciting whitewater rafting outing, which we could do again if there is interest.
4.  A hike for the teens to Mount St. Helens.

Three new ideas:
1.  A trip on the Chelatchie Prairie Railroad, an 1841 diesel locomotive pulling regular and open-air passenger cars through beautiful scenic country including a stop at Moulton Falls.  (About 50 minutes away in Yacolt, WA) http://www.bycx.com/

2.  The Pomeroy Living History Farm which has people in period costumes presenting interactive exhibits on how farming used to be done; on this weekend there will also be demonstrations of steam-powered logging.

3.  Perhaps a two-night campout for teens starting from Wednesday morning and ending on Friday morning, during the Kejiwaan Days that begin the congress.
